  • Liz Vayda, founder of B. Willow-opened up the iconic Baltimore plant shop at a time when no other boutiques were around the area. “Boutique plant shops weren’t really a thing here,” she shares in this interview. We’ll take a quick tour of her charming corner shop, see how she got her start, and her forays into international plant conservation. If you’re in the Baltimore area, feel free to stop in and say, “Hi!” www.bwillow.com/

    I mostly cultivate cactus native to where i live (here in South America), it's so cool to see a shop working on conservation!! poaching is such a huge issue but it's not hopeless, together we can solve it. great video!!

    what a beautiful shop with a wonderful philosophy- i would gladly buy there!🍀
    so much to overthink in this plant selling buisness..- i personally would appriciate legal actions that make e.g. big box stores take plastik nursery pots back- they are for sure not single use. . .im drowning in plastik nursery pots- asket a plant selling chain if they take them back- to be recycled/used again. . - they said well we would throw them into trash. .sadly very frustrating

    • @b.willow7046
      @b.willow7046 4 месяца назад +2

      YES I hate beyond words how wasteful the nursery pots are. We've reached out to our suppliers to take them back and only one, a small local grower, says yes. Says something doesn't it... we hope to eventually grow our own plants but for now our goal is to shift from working primarily with plant brokers to plant growers. Would love to continue the convo about the environmental impacts of the houseplant industry. Would love to see it become more eco-friendly...and it can! Just takes more people advocating and becoming more aware...

    I've had an Aloe hybrid from there I got in December 2022. Nice to see the place get exposure to the plant community. There are many great plant shops around DC, MD and North Virginia. I remember Summer has also been to Homestead Gardens though. If you're ever in Leesburg Virginia, the downtown has a cute plant shop called "Foliage Plant Shop" nestled within a bookstore called "Birch Tree Book Store".

    I suggest you get to know Mich at Prickly Prospects nursery in Tucson. He's a Ph.D. sort whose nursery is also a botanic garden and he's very much into conservation. His plants include many rare, threatened, etc. He's a great source of information as well as plants. His thesis was on effects of climate change on cacti. If you decide to visit Tucson's many gardens and cactus/succulent nurseries, reach out to me. Retired nurseryman complete with guest house. I like what you're doing and getting your niche firmly establisthed.

      Sorry, copying and pasting from my other comment - Gentrification is 100% happening in Baltimore- I would never dispute that or pretend that I'm not privileged as a white woman. What we were specifically discussing that didn't make it completely into the episode was how our neighborhood, Remington, used to have a vibrant array of corner stores. At some point they became re-zoned as residential, and lots of these corner stores sat vacant for literally decades. It took a lot of work from our community organization and lots of others to re-zone these corner stores to be commercial... so shops could even open and operate. Hope this adds a little more clarity to that part of the conversation.

      @b.willow7046 what saddens me most is the cloud of whiteness felt in this episode. I have been watching Plant One On Me quite a bit and this was the first time I felt whiteness and the possible role white privilege may have had for your business. It was terrible. I wish there was more thought as to how this episode and what made it in may have resonated to viewers negatively impacted by gentrification. I didn't enjoy the episode for that reason. While I appreciate your response, with everything terrible happening in the world, I wish either the implications of gentrification was addressed fully or not implied at all.

    Cactus and Succulent Societies will have members that have been there for so long that they turn a cheek if one habitat collects and give an excuse. Hearing this more helps for the younger ones. No exceptions and no excuses absolutely. Thank you!
